Background:

LGB 21471 MTS/DCC SBB-Brunig HG 3/3 Rack Steam Locomotive 1068 with prototypical livery and markings of the Swiss Brunig Railroad. It is a beautiful and amazing G-scale replica of a steam engine which hauled trains on this mixed rack and adhesion line. Possibly LGB's most detailed loco model, it is made in Germany and features tons of added-on details (not just molded-in) including super detailed valve gear and cab interior, triple directional lanterns and a smoke generator.

Equipped with an LGB decoder installed by the LGB German factory for MTS and DCC or DC analog use. The decoder works on DC (analog) LGB MTS or NMRA DCC and uses back EMF to precisely control its powerful 7-pole Bühler motor.

The rack mechanism of the HG 3/3 is powered by separate cylinders and gears which rotate in the opposite direction and faster than the mechanism driving the wheels. The rack mechanism is engaged when the loco encounters a track section containing the rack necessary to climb steep grades and disengages when the loco returns to level track.

The loco together with its original box and driver figure are in LGB original box and foam carrier.

The Prototype:

The Brunigbahn runs from Lucerne across the Brunig Pass to Interlaken, where it connects to the Berner Oberland-Bahnen (BOB). Between 1910 and 1926, the Swiss Locomotive and Machiner Works (SLM) bui9lt seventeen HG 3/3 rack steam locomotives for the Brunigbahn, as well as four for the Berner Oberland_Bahnen. These locos hauled trains on the mixed rack and adhesion line. The Brunigbahn was converted to catinary operation in 1941 but the last five HG 3/3s were used as backups and for freight traffic until 1965.

Today one of these fascinating locos can be examined at the Swiss Transportation Museum in Lucerne, while another is displayed at the Meiringen station. Loco number 1067 has been resorted and can be enjoyed on historic passenger trains on the Ballenberg Dampfbahn, a steam operated museum railway running from Interlaken Ost to Giswil.

The rack mechanism of the 3/3 is powered by separate cylinders and gears, which rotate in the opposite direction and faster than the mechanism driving the wheels. The separate rack mechanism is turned off when the loco is on level tracks, allowing the loco to travel at higher speeds power by adhesion alone.
