Train power overview:
The Magnum 10-SR is an all in one 10 AMP train controller. It provides an honest 10 AMP output at 20 volts.
The Magnum 10-SR lacks voltage regulation with load and line voltage changes. This can cause all trains running to slow down when another train is started as the added load drops the power output. This is typical of most model railroad controllers with the exception of the Shourt Line regulated power supply and throttle system. Our system uses a regulated power supply which means the voltage is constant regardless of the loading and starting extra trains will not slow the ones already running. In addition a regulated power supply keeps the output voltage constant regardless of fluctuations in power line voltage and this also helps protect train electronics from over voltage problems.
The Magnum has very low ripple and in fact has one of the lowest ripple values model train controllers. The Shourt Line power supply also has a low ripple output value. More importantly the Shourt Line power supply output ripple is not the typical 60 cycle ripple of other controllers which is harmful to locos but the ripple is at a much higher frequency, higher than the PWM frequency used by DCC decoders that has proven to be safe for loco motors.
The Magnum 10-SR includes a ball bearing fan for cooling. This is important as controllers that use large copper transformers, which add weight and cost to the controller, have very poor efficiency in dropping the 115VAC 60HZ voltage to the desired voltage for model railroading or 24 to 32 volts AC. Efficiency level of large transformers is usually less than 50 percent and this means a lot of heat is generated which must be removed using a fan to exhaust the heated air. The Shourt Line regulated power supplies do not use large copper transformers but rather use a very small transformer operating at very high frequency about 1MHZ instead of the 60HZ of the line frequency. This makes the efficiency go up above 87% which produces less heat, saves $ in power cost and also boosts the life of the power supply to over 200,000 hours which also saves $.
The Magnum 10-SR has a circuit breaker mounted on the rear panel as well as an internal over current protection circuit which is important for short circuit protection. One of the advantages to using a Shourt Line regulated power supply is it's inherent high speed short circuit protection that large transformer based power supplies lack.
The Magnum is easy to setup and use and provides reliable safe analog train operation. We do not recommend it for powering a DCC system as the output power is not regulated and lacks over voltage protection due to power line surges. When you have to use the Magnum to power DCC equipment, use it's DC output as it does have the advantage over it's AC output, of capacitor voltage buffering.
The Magnum 10-SR is RC ready and can be used with the Bridgeworks RC-100 two button remote control.

The direction switch has forward, stop and reverse positions. The Momentum switch provides realistic train operation and avoids fast start/stop operation by junior engineers. The maximum speed can also be set using the slide stopper shown above to the right side of the throttle.
The rear panel has banana jacks outputs for unregulated power for; Track, DC and AC power. A wired or wireless throttle can also be attached to the Remote Throttle Jacks. A circuit breaker at the rear of the unit protects against over current from the AC power input.
